PUBLIC NOTICE: A MESSAGE TO POLITICAL PARTIES, ASSOCIATIONS, AND THE PEOPLE OF LAGOS STATE ON THE NEED TO CONSIDER AND FIELD A GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE FROM IKORODU DIVISION IN 2027

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Lagos Governor, 1999 to 2007, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, Governor 2007 to 2015, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor, 2015 to 2019 and the incumbent, Mr Babajide Sanwo -Olu, 2019 till 2027

The attention of well-meaning stakeholders across Lagos State is respectfully drawn to the imperative of equity, fairness, and inclusive governance as we steadily approach the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

Lagos State, widely regarded as a Centre of Excellence and a beacon of progressive leadership in Nigeria, has thrived on the principles of justice, balance, and broad-based participation. Since its creation in 1967, the state has been structured along five administrative divisions—Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos, and Epe—popularly referred to as IBILE. In addition, the state is politically organized into three senatorial districts: Lagos East, Lagos West, and Lagos Central. These frameworks have historically guided political representation and power sharing within the state.

However, a critical review of the state’s political history reveals a glaring imbalance. Ikorodu Division, despite its undeniable contributions to the political, economic, and social development of Lagos State, has yet to produce a democratically elected Governor.

In the Fourth Republic, Lagos State has been governed by the following distinguished leaders:

  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu (1999–2007) – Lagos West/Ikeja
  • Babatunde Raji Fashola (2007–2015) – Lagos Central/Lagos
  • Akinwunmi Ambode (2015–2019) – Lagos East/Epe
  • Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (2019–2027) – Lagos Central/Lagos

From this trajectory, it is evident that Lagos East Senatorial District has only held the governorship for a single term of four years, while Ikorodu Division has not featured at all in the democratic leadership of the state.

Looking further back, during earlier civilian administrations, Lagos State was led by:

  • Lateef Jakande (1979–1983) – Lagos Division
  • Michael Otedola (1992–1993) – Epe Division

These historical precedents further highlight that both Ikorodu and Badagry Divisions remain underrepresented. When considered alongside the current practice of senatorial balancing, fairness and equity strongly support the case for the governorship to return to Lagos East—specifically to Ikorodu Division—in 2027.

Ikorodu Division stands today as one of the most vibrant, strategic, and rapidly developing regions in Lagos State. With a growing population, expanding economic base, and a pool of highly competent and experienced professionals across various sectors—both locally and in the diaspora—the division is more than prepared to produce a capable and visionary Governor.

Beyond capacity, Ikorodu has consistently demonstrated political loyalty and active participation in the democratic process. During the 2023 general elections, the division delivered one of the highest vote counts in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Similarly, in the 2025 local government elections, Ikorodu recorded one of the highest voter turnouts in the country—clear evidence of its strong civic engagement and commitment to democratic ideals.

This message, therefore, serves as a passionate and patriotic appeal to all political parties, socio-political organizations, community leaders, and the good people of Lagos State to embrace the principle of fairness by supporting the emergence of a credible gubernatorial candidate from Ikorodu Division in 2027.

Such a decision will not only promote equity and justice but will also reinforce unity, inclusiveness, and a deeper sense of belonging among all divisions of the state. It will further strengthen our collective resolve to build a Lagos that truly reflects equal opportunity for all.

We urge stakeholders to commence early consultations, strategic engagements, and consensus-building efforts toward actualizing this noble and just cause.

Lagos belongs to all of us. Together, let us continue to build a state where equity, justice, and sustainable progress reign supreme.

Choose Ikorodu for Governor.
